Cydia - Speed up your iOS with Jailbreaking

by | |

Lately I have been hearing complaints from people with older generation iPhone/touchs that they are annoyed with crashing or slow loading times or shortened battery life. Some have even tried to say that it is the Jailbreak software causing the issue. On the contrary, Cydia provides tools that can optimize your iPhone or iPod Touch to run much more smoothly and save battery life at the same time.  The app that I will use in this tutorial is called SBSettings.

Step one

Install SBSettings

Go to Cydia and search for “SBSETTINGS“. Scroll down past the numerous add-ons until you see the Mac logo. (IMAGES BELOW)

Install the package and respiring back to the homepage. Now the magic can start.

Step two

Swipe of the finger

Swipe your finger across the status bar to open up SBSettings . This is the Status bar I am talking about if you do not know.

Step three

Update Options

Next you will see a screen similar to the image below depending on the theme. You are looking for the  “more” button.

Now in the SBSettings, tap on “Extras & Options”.

Now what we need turned on is “Statusbar Free Mem“.
Choose any other options that would be handy for you also. I use Numeric Battery as you can see in the top right.

Push the back button and then home button to respring. From the home screen slide your  hand across status bar (Step one) to get back to SBSettings.

Step Four

Kill the apps!

It does not mean you are actually ruining the app in any way when you “kill an app”, it just means you are clearing it from your cache.
Now take notice of the new free Memory indicator in the status bar showing 104 MB currently free. Lets click on the “Processes” button.

You see a screen like the one below. Kill whatever applications you are not using currently. You will notice the Free Memory status update live. Now the cool part.
Click on “FREE UP MEMORY“.

For me I was able to free up from 104 MB to 167 MB (63 MB free’d) on my iPhone 3Gs as seen in the picture below.

Conclusion

With this tools quick toggling I have been able to conserve my battery life much longer by keeping the processor free from extra work it does not need to be doing, and shutting off hardware I am not using such as wifi and bluetooth. Also, adjusting the brightness lower and switching off push notifications will make a huge  difference with  battery life. Even more importantly this has made my iPhone and iPod Touch run much more smoothly and quicker than when it was not jailbroken. Highly suggested for all iPhone, iPod users!
